Hi Steve,
There is room to add a switch to get two tracks into the machine shop (two switches but one off the Kingsport Branch lead, then one off that). I'd prefer to leave it for now and when my version of Kentville is complete, then things can be reworked for your earlier version, like adding the sand tower to the machine shop, adding more tracks to the roundhouse, removing the walkway and conveyor between the roundhouse and Canada Foods, that sort of thing.
I use TS Modeler for drawing structures and rolling stock, Corel for creating texture but you can do them in Photoshop as well. You can get TSM at:

The listed price is $40 US for a download, more often then not they will sell it to you for as low as $25 "on special". This is for personal/non-commercial use only, if you want to make payware anything the price jumps to $395... ouch! Still pretty cheap for making freeware routes. I can help you with this if you decide to buy it, I have no experience with Gmax or Google Sketch up which other have used, all have their little problems which can be dealt with one way or the other, nothing to be concerned about really.
Chris bought me my copy for Christmas one year, not too long after it came out, think it was $50 back then and it's been as low as $10 in Wal-Mart, a good value for what you can do with it, to be honest in the last four years I've created the FJ&G, STRy, and now working on the DAR routes, plus a couple of dozen pieces of rolling stock all for about $40 on top of Chris' Christmas present, pretty cheap hobby when it comes down to it.
Just finishing the Car Shops, doing this, the Repair Shops, and Heating Plant as one drawing to save objects per tile... also easier to connect the buildings with the steal pipes.
Paul
