Canadian Gypsum

This category is to contain the railway assets of Canadian Gypsum. See the page Gypsum Trains for more details and photographs of gypsum operations.

Canadian Gypsum was formed in 1924 from the J.B. King Company. It operated a small fleet of saddle tank locomotives. Two of these locomotives, Canadian Gypsum No. 5 and No. 7 were built by the Montreal Locomotive Works in 1926. They were purchased in early 1948 by the Huntsville and Lake of Bays Railway in Ontario in a deal arranged by railway equipment dealer Andrew Merrilees. Known as the "Portage Flyer", Nos. 5 & 7 operated until 1959.(1) Restored in 2000, the two former gypsum locomotives, now numbered Nos. 1 & 2, now operate in the Muskoka Pioneer village at Huntsville.(2)

No. 555 was reported by Colin Churcher as being sold to Fundy Gypsum in 1947. (3) No. 503 was sold to Canadian Gypsum at Windsor in March 1947.(4)
