Web Site for Memory Lane
We now have the green light to go ahead and develop the Memory Lane Museum web site!
I'm wrestling with the choice of domain name though. The museum name is so long it's not practical to register that. I also want to use an ORG domain name but as well want to block the use of it's COM counterpart so that the name doesn't get hijacked by "those" domain name sites.
And ideas for a reasonably short domain name?

Hmmm..
I checked it out here and it said it was taken.
http://www.networksolutions.com/domain- ... ue&ec=true
Yep.. it's definitely taken...
http://reports.internic.net/cgi/whois?w ... ype=domain
Aha.. memorylane.ca is NOT taken. Forgot about our own top level domains (CA). Unfortunately I can't have it because someone else has http://memorylane.ns.ca/ so that blocks you taking just the .ca
Do you think this is too much of a mouthful:
memorylanerailwaymuseum.ca
?? It is available of course.

Re: Hmmm..
No not too much and when links are a clickableone, people dopn't care how long it is. I only care when I type it and that is when it needs to be easy and memorable.STEM wrote:

OK. As of yesterday the museum has a domain name which is:
(tada - Thanks Ric) memorylanerailwaymuseum.org
I actually got 3 TLDs (com, org, net) at the same time because you have to protect the name against domain "parkers" who hijack complimentary coms orgs and nets when you don't tie them all down.
Web site development can now start. I am seriously looking at Drupal to do the job of site content management. Anyone familiar enough with this program to offer a comment if Drupal is the best choice for a museum site?

I have now chosen Drupal as the content management system and am starting to configure the site. I hope by the end of January that the site will start to fill out with some good content that will make the museum look pretty good.
Danny Smith has promised to send me some photos inside and out so I can start to develop some exhibits pages.
If anyone else has some photos or is willing to take some and send them to me, that would be greatly appreciated as well. Would it be too much to hope for that someone could get some basic dimensions of the station and freight shed too? If it were so, I'd like to CAD the museum and put it up on the Wiki for anyone to download.

Just went to the site. It's a little sparse.

It's not sparse; it's not even started really! No photos and no content from the folks at the museum so what am I supposed to do?
That's why I asked if you had taken some photos because then I might at least have something to start with.

Re: Web Site for Memory Lane
I was able to spend an afternoon at the Middleton station last week. I have three exterior images and three or four images of DAR ticket & express boxes/cabinets inside the station. The next afternoon managed to slip in a visit to Parrsboro to view DAR's last vessel, M.V. KIPAWO.! Again I have photos, but Steve many have to walk me through up-loading.

It's pretty straight forward to upload files. When you reply to this message, look at the bottom below the "Submit" button and there's a "filename" field with a "browse" button so you can pick the file off of your disk and upload it here. Below that is another field to add a comment for the file you've uploaded. I'm doing it right now just to test it too.
