1256 on the DAR?

Post by downeastrailfan »

I'm not aware of a 1200 series Pacific ever operating on the DAR, so this likely a mistake:

The location is east of Westfield Beach near Saint John, NB. The train may be the Gull.

That makes a lot of sense, the consist appears to be mixed, even has what appears to be a couple of CN baggage cars followed by a stainless steel car... was trying to figure out what train that would be on the DAR!

1256 on the DAR?

Interesting slide for sale has raised some eyebrows. 1256 on the DAR? We don't think so.

Vendor reports slide as:
ORIG SLIDE Canadian Pacific 4-6-2 1256 action on Dominion Atlantic!
Original Kodachrome "Gray Mount" slide processed by Kodak.
Wheeling a seven-car train through Digby NS on July 8 1954.

I posted this question on Yahoo Groups "Rails NB" and here is the most comprehensive response:

That is 'The Gull' CP train # 114 working her heart out as she climbs from the 22 foot elevation at
Westfield Beach Mi 14 up to 107 foot elevation at Epworth Park Mi 11.
The first car is a CP Mail/Express car that was dropped in McAdam by Montreal to
Saint John train # 42.
The next 2 headend cars are either Maine Central and/or Boston & Maine baggage cars,
followed by 2 B & M stainless steel coaches and finally 2 Pullman sleepers.
Westbound that evening the CP car will be on # 41 to Montreal.
The other 2 headend cars will probably have ice packed boxes of fish in
with passenger baggage and express parcels. If the train was much longer,
heavy 4-6-2 Pacific # 2332 would probably be doing the honours.
US Custom & Immigration officers will board the train at Fredericton jct and
start the inspection procedures and have their work completed by the time
they reach Vanceboro. One or more express reefers with fish from St Andrews
may also be added at McAdam.
I did many a trip on the Gull between McAdam-Fredericton Jct-Saint John and
I still remember the stale cigar smoke. They just never smelled as fresh as
the CP coaches. Having never paid for the ride, I guess I shouldn't complain.

I contacted the seller with the correct info, but the listing was not updated before the auction ended.
