I have discovered another probable identification mistake.
http://www.dardpi.ca/wiki/index.php?title=DAR0016
The postcard can not be No. 16. The smoke stack is different, the headlight is different and in one the cab is side braced and the other is not but for sure that is a single digit on the front of the boiler!!
By the way the artist has drawn the handrail crossing over the boiler in the front it would have to be at least No. 19, the first observed Baldwin model with this noticible feature.
It seems that this could well be DAR No. 18 still lettered as WCR No. 6. The smoke stack, main cyclinders and headlight matches and the single digit number looks like a "6".

Re: No. 16
I have an original of that postcard in my collection, but the locomotive has been so heavily retouched by the artist that I think it is nearly impossible to identify the engine. The only thing I can see is I don't think it could be the DAR 18 still in the Y&A number, as the cylinders do not appear to be the Vaulclain compound type, which 17 & 18 had until 1907.
If we could see the original photograph that the card was derived from it would likely clear the whole thing up.
Where did the identification of it being #16 come from in the first place?
Jim O'Donnell

Re: No. 16
It was so identified I believe when it first appeared on the NS Gov web site. I see that they have now redone the original page it was on to make it zoomable and the description now no longer indicates that it is No. 16.
With no definitive citation, I shall now remove it from the No. 16 page and just leave it on the Yarmouth and Yarmouth Wharf pages.
There must be an orginal photo like this somewhere though. Perhaps one days we'll run into it and solve the mystery.

Re: No. 16
I overlooked this thread of discussion until Steve drew my attention. I identified this postcard as No. 16 because NSARM has a very sharp original photograhic print of this image in the G.E. Lovett Collection - you can clearly read the number plate and the cab name. The photo is framed by the DAR crest and signed by P. Gifkins himself. There is a strange light coloured oval crest on the baggage car which I can't read - anyone recognize it?

Re: No. 16
Last time I looked it was not online. NSARM is a bit random on what railway images they have scanned.

When you aked if anyone recognized it thought that indicated it was online.Dan Conlin wrote:There is a strange light coloured oval crest on the baggage car which I can't read - anyone recognize it?
