Confirmed Middleton Station 1916

Post by SamuelMClark »

The guys at the Middleton Station found a book (Middleon 1909 - 1984 pg 26.) that they have and it referenced 21st June 1916 of when the three story station burnt down. The wiki has been updated, though I'll still search out some newspapers to have a second source.

Confirmed the Middleton 3 storey station burnt down on 21st June 1916 via newspaper article from The Halifax Hearld. Now just need to confirm opening date of the current station.

Also so others know the Middleton Station Museum is planning on having a fund raiser this summer to mark the 100th birthday of the station.

Nice sleuthing there Samuel. The articles about the fire are fascinating. The book Railway Stations of the Maritimes gives 1917 as the date of the current station - I wonder if it took until the next year for the replacement to be completed. Also some neat stuff about the Middleton engine house. Looks like it was there for a shunting locomotive that seems to have been based at Middleton, the same one that saved all the cars around the station.

The current station opened in January 1917, I've gone with the date of Monday 8th January 1917 as the newspaper article from Friday 12th January states staff moved back into the station on Monday, and I had looked though the next couple of papers (weekly paper) and didn't see any official notice of it opening other than the article of the new station from the 12th.

This is excellent work and just plain hard digging! Thanks for the quality research.

Would you also put a bug in your own ear regarding these statements in case during your searches you run into some info that would illuminate some other unknowns:

The first Middleton Railway Station was constructed between 1869 and 1873. It is not known at this time if Middleton was one of the original 10 contracted stations built in 1869 or if it was built sometime before 1873 as one of 23 stations present in 1873.

A larger station was built in 1890.[2]

Don't worry I plan on trying to confirm that information as well ;)

I plan on doing some digging for other stations as well, though I might need to clone my self in order to get all the work done that needs to be done!

I was working on a clone for myself too but never got it finished and just decided to burn out naturally.
