Yarmouth Field Trips

Post by hecrowell »

Well, Visit to Yarmouth rapidly coming to an end and will be returning to Saint John, NB tomorrow (Monday, 14th)
My visit also turned out to be firld trips to various museums and Cultural Centers along the SOuthwestern end of the line and included:
Weymouth
Digby
Yarmouth

Weymouth:
Found some pictures which I believe will be new to the WIKI as well as info as to where the train station was located. Also from the cultural center in plain sight was the trestle across the Sissaboo River - minus tracks of course - so now I have nailed down its exact location.
Digby: The Admiral Digby museum was a wealth of info as I was able to locate the 1939 blueprint for the switchyard. Unfortunately, my pictures taken from the prints did not turn out well but Sheryl Stanton (curator) obliged us by doing a reshoot of the prints which have been forwarded to Steve for inclusion in the WIKI. Maybe I will have to do an AutoCad version to further clarify the tracking system - what do you think, Steve?
Yarmouth: Finally - I found the 1925 blueprint for the Yarmouth Switchyard which covers everything from the turning wye just North of the town and South so that it also includes the DAR/CNR junction point. This print greatly clarifies the whole waterfront area of the harbour and how it appeared from 1925 to well into the 40's.
FInally, Skip Goudy (my Yarmouth contact) presented me with two DVD's which contain somewhere around 2000 (yes two thousand) pictures of key buildings and locations. Skip also told me that he is a member of the Yarmouth Co. Museum and would be happy to research anything that the DPI needs to know. I am happy to have Skip - even if he is not signed up as a member - "All Aboard" this project with us...I believe he deserves honorable mention for his work.

So, all in all, it was to my mind a very rewarding visit, a lot of work got done and info obtained which will place many more missing pieces in the puzzle for this end of the rail line which was so important not only to the Town of Yarmouth, but the DAR itself.

Cheers

I have to tell everyone that thanks to Harold and his hard work and extreme interest in the Yarmouth area much new ground that was badly wanting was broken in our collective knowledge of the Yarmouth town and subdivision. The connection to the local Yarmouth and Digby county museums has been a phenomenal doing as well resulting in many new images of the Yarmouth subdivision that most have never seen.

Here's the 1925 Yarmouth Railyards that Harold was talking about for example:

Incredible! Thanks a whole bunch Harold.

Hi Mike:
Sorry about the huge delay, but I have been tied up with other issues that have kept me out of here for a bit.
Yes, I am in Saint John - East Saint John not far from the airport. Wondering if you know Norm and Mary Lou Muise in Chance Hbr....friends of ours who we haven't seen now for some time.

Don't know the Muises but I have heard the name mentioned. I'm a newcomer; only lived in Chance Habour for 12.5 years!! :-)
