Kingsport Traffic

Post by Paul Charland »

Hi Again,

One of the routes I was looking at was the Truro Sub, I had expected that there would have been more traffic on it as back in the steam days Truro was the principal interchange with the Canadian National... I had visions of a double header freight running between there and Kentville, but then I woke up and, and well, that was the end of that idea.

A few years ago Steve suggested the Kingsport branch but I just didn't have much information on it. It's looks pretty scenic the little I've seen of it, so now I'm wondering it there would be enough freight activity on the line to justify the work involved in creating the route, as well as the Weston branch. I see the Weston branch still had scheduled service three days a week into the thirties, so there must have been a bit of freight to handle.

There was a lot of traffic on the Truro Sub many double headers troop trains with CNR passenger equipment. They would have to double the hill between Clifton and Princeport(ruling grade). The last years 1980-82 the freights ran only 3 days a week at times 40 plus cars. Keep an open mind Paul don't rule out this Sub. :)

Thanks Andrew,

I knew about the troop trains and I was hoping to find that there was a scheduled freight. I was sure I've seen shots of double headers as well, must have been run as extras then.

Was there any customers between Truro and Brooklyn, South Maitland looks like it might have had one or two.

In my time 1970's there was Feed to South Maitland regularly, wood chips out ,lumber out at Kennetcook. Boxcars in siding at Scotch Village pictured in the 70's.Farmers would get deliveries of lime or fertilizer by boxcar at various sidings. Maybe Brooklyn had some COOP traffic. In Clifton there was air dumps there often to rock along the Bay towards Truro also Burro there with flatcar and bunk car. A large work train would be put in the siding at S.Maitland at times to work on the bridge piers . They often had to add steel protectors to the pier as ice would dammage them. Regular freights stopped in the late 1950's they would travel before the mixed left Truro. The rendering plant in Lower Truro (there own siding) sent out tallow by tank car till the end. The Discovery Train had also traveled the Midland in 1979-80 with CN power 3 MR-14 1700's watched them leave CN trackage and move to DAR yard west of station. A extra crew came up from Windsor to take it to the valley. Sperry car also maybe 1 time a year.

Hi Andrew,

When I had all those consists from you I only recorded the movements from Windsor south, I'm sorry I didn't keep track of the car movements on the Truro Sub as well.

Did the Discovery Train make it all the way to Yarmouth?

Hi Andrew,

So would this freight have a train number or have run as an extra? I looked through the wiki for an ETT during the war years but there were none from '38 to '46.

Hi Andrew,

Thanks, I hadn't read them before. Interesting to see the two S-3 worked their way into a regular job on 58 for a while, then they went somewhere else.

Thanks Steve,

The 1944 Timetable covers "mainland" trains, didn't see any DAR there!

The first link is page 8 and it has the DAR to Digby, Yarmouth to Halifax and the Kingsport sub on it.

You're right though, page 9 has nothing DAR on it. Sorry about that.

Hi Andrew. Can that double header photo go on the wiki? That's a great shot! Do you know the photographer, location, date or the number of the second unit?

Double headers seemed to be a regular on the Midland during the 10 wheeler days. That well known derailment wreck of No. 26 & No. 27 where they hit 2 cows was way back in 1920.

Hi Steve,

I'll look again. It would be nice to find an ETT from the early 40s out there somewhere!
