back in business

Post by hecrowell »

Well, after cleaning off my old PC and reloading everything, disaster struck! A power Supply problem wiped out the mother board and there I was - high and dry. Having had enough of that, I bit the bullet and went shopping. Arrived home with new machine and it is a beaut. 2.66m dual core, 12g memory, real good video card, 1 Tb Hard drive (SATA) and completed the pkg with 23" LCD monitor. Talk about graphics now! Even FSX which I could not run properly on the old machine still has at least 45fps with all controls in the graphic settings topped to the maximum. I would recommend this machine to anyone. The graphics in MSTS are unbelievable - seeing things that I never saw before.

Slowly getting my Yarmouth route back in shape. MSTS and RE still complain about various road sections and track sections that it can't seem to find, so have to troubleshoot that by running it through Route Riter again and getting a list of whats not being seen then find out why.

Anyway guys - thats enough for this post - will keep you "posted" (pardon the pun) on how things are going.

Nice machine! 12 GB of memory!! You must have bought it with a 64 flavour of Vista or Windows 7.

Of note that I would recommend is to check to see if you have a board that supports RAID on the drives. If it does, you should buy an identical hard drive and install it as a RAID 1 (mirror) so you never lose your data even if you lose a hard drive.

If you got your machine with Windows 7 Professional but your board doesn't support RAID 1, then you can still RAID 1 two drives with the disk management utility. That's what I did! Think about it anyway.

Yeppers - yer right on the Win 7 & 64 bit. I was worried that it might have been preloaded with VISTA - My daughter has it on her HP Laptop and I have to say, I'm not a big fan of that OS. To my minds eye, Win7 (and I have the Home Premium version) has the same flavor as XP - which I became very comfortable with, so, al in all I am happy (so far). The only issue that i have not sorted out yet is with a piece of amateur radio software I use (EhoCW) which acts as an automatic keyer via the com port to TX CW and a decode function which decodes the CW tones from another program I use called CQ100. For some reason, EhoCW will not grab the audio from CQ100 to decode it...hope I can sort that out soon.
Will have to chk out my bord re: RAID. My board would have to support it though because I do not have the Win 7 Pro version.

For a number of reasons, you may be interested in upgrading. Here's the comparison chart and here's a Bestbuy page with the price:

http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetai ... atid=21236

Worth the price? Well key features like software RAID 1 and Windows XP emulation to run old programs are probably serious features you actually will need.

I'm really liking my Windows 7. I've got Pro and Ultimate on computers in my office and have nothing but good things to say about it from the ground up. Sometime I get frustrated that I can't find things where they once were in XP but I'm usually rewarded once I do find it with far superior features than I ever had in XP.

Now that Paul on Version 3 b55 has gone all the way to Yarmouth AND has made the route Open Rails compatible we are talking in another thread about doing some multi player sessions. Would you be interested?
