DARv2 Berwick, Nova Scotia

Post by Paul Charland »

DARv2 is coming along, here are a few shots of Berwick, Nova Scotia.

Train 25 crosses Commercial Street in Berwick.

8136 takes the passing siding as it arrives.

After a little switching the crew is ready to set off a car at the Berwick Fruit Co. warehouse and then take a run to Graves Foods.

Image

After lifting one boxcar and spotting another, 8136 heads back to the mainline.

Image

An empty CN pressure differential covered hopper is lifted from Berwick Bakery.

Image

8136 passes through the Berwick yard heading back to their train.

Image

As the sun sets the two empties are left at the east end of the passing siding for Train 26 as 8136 runs around on the main and back to the head end of their train.

Some of my fav screens shots! These were all taken while running Open Rails instead of MSTS.

So I can use Open Rail to run these files instead of trying to find Microsoft Train Simulator?

You can with the caveat that you have to have a full MSTS installation in the first place for all the required support files. As well Paul's release notes (readme.txt) in the DAR route folder states you also require the following 3rd party add-ons:

Newroads v4.0 Standard Pack.
Xtracks 3.20
MSTS BIN 1.7 or above

Does that answer all your questions?

PS I have attached a screen shot of me running Open Rails in multiplayer mode on my one computer. I had two sessions going - one for each train!

DAR 9058 in War Bonnet scheme heading east passes 8126 extra waiting on the siding for the Dayliner to pass before proceeding to Kingston.

Hi Samuel,

Open Rails is not (yet) a stand alone program, as Steve stated, you still need a full install of MSTS. There are a few problems with running routes in OR, if you compare the shot I posted of Annapolis Valley Peat Moss to the one Steve posted from OR you'll see the transfers I used for the dirt roads and parking areas around the building are not reproduced to the size i have them in MSTS, that means all the farm fields and parking lots will be screwed up as well. Forests don't place trees in the same way MSTS does, so in OR trees will likely be found in the middle of some roads or in structures. Until OR has there own route editor tools it's impossible for someone like me to guess how things will appear in OR to compensate for their program handling things differently then MSTS.

AH okay, so I'll still have to try and find a copy of Microsoft Train Simulator then. I had bought Train Simulator 2013 the other week when it was on sale (75% off).

Train Simulator is a really good program from all reports but it's very European in it's support and fan base.

I bought Trainz actually and tried it too but was super disappointed in the controls, the selection of rolling stock and routes and especially in the poor frame rates. I think on my I7 Hyperthreaded 64 bit system with an NVIDEA Quadro FX 2800FM (96 cores) graphics card at 1920 x 1200 I was down to 7 FPS. :( The chug chug chug was too much to bear so I uninstalled it at that point and have never used it again.

Paul of course is right that ground cover and forest do some funny things. But Paul also knows that more and more of us are having trouble with MSTS on Windows so OR is our saving grace at this point allowing us to enjoy the fruits of his labour albeit with a few stray trees here and there and some weirdness in the ground covers. It won't be, as Paul said, until the editor comes out 2 versions from now that anyone will be able to specifically edit routes for OR from OR and see what's going on to fix them specifically for better appearance on OR.

By the way, I discovered that while running OR you can hit the "pause" key, then hit the "8" key for a free roam camera and take your time composing screen shots. And even better still, whether frozen in pause or running, when you hit the "PrtScn" button, OR takes progressive screens shots, labels them with the time and date and stores them in your Library\Pictures\My Pictures\Open Rails folder as PNGs. Nice

I'm busy playing OR in multi player mode again today. Fun!
