DAR Train 50

Post by Paul Charland »

Hi All,

Working my way between Windsor and Windsor Junction and thought I'd stop and take a few shots.

Here's Train 50 rolling northeast under Highway 101 east of Ellershouse:

The train is seen crossing a causeway over Five Islands Lake on the way to Halifax:

As the train approaches Mount Uniacke you can see the outdoor skating rink pad and boards behind the Uniacke and District Volunteer Fire Department... that's the brick building not the little blue equipment shed!

Image

Talk about a true flag stop, after the station was removed a station sign was erected at the crossing, the steel green and white flag was stuck in the holder to signal the engineman to stop:

Train 50 passes a large Nova Scotia Light and Power sub station about 8 1/2 miles from Windsor Junction:

I couldn't tell you how many times I ran that section with no scenery. Now I'm going to be lost with so much to look at <chuckle>.

As usual, it is looking superb. You are going all the way to Windsor Jct right? I assume you have it planned to have the station and freight sheds there too right?

I don't see the Mt. Uniacke station there. Did you discover what date they tore the station down?
The same would go for Ellershouse.

Hi Steve,

Just finished to MP 6 today closing into Windsor Junction. Scenery and rail will extend about two miles in each direction on the CN Bedford Sub and a mile on the Dartmouth sub to allow space for CN AI traffic to spawn and DAR trains to run on CN trackage to start or end activities.

Don't remember any freight sheds at Windsor Junction, but certainly will be doing the station and any other buildings I can identify.

I didn't find the date the station at Mount Uniacke was torn down but did find a 1974 date on a shot of the Mount Uniacke sign with the steel flag holder. Don't know if Ellershouse actually had a station, think it was just the crossing outside town.

Hi Steve,

Thanks, looks like it was inside the wye behind the station. I'll have to check and see if it turns up in any mid-70s photos.

All I can say is thank goodness for Mr Charland. His wizzardry at route building and scenery making is something that comes only a few times in a lifetime and something that only few can master. I am glad that I am alive to witness his work with very much appreciation!

Thank you Paul

Hi Harold.

Nice to see you drop in again. I had trouble running MSTS on my Win 7 64 bit platform so I've been running it on Open Rails. Not a perfect program yet as some scenery goes away and a few other strange problems but performance is over the top and the wide screen views are terrific.

So did you shelf the Yarmouth sub? You were starting to make some real progress.

Hi All,

If you haven't updated your Open Rails Steve I understand the last release added transfers, although I'm not sure exactly how they look. Some say the are smaller then the specs used my the route builder for MSTS.

Harold contacted me the other day about extending the route south. A couple of problems with that, most notably the two way freights running at night would mean I'd have to create night textures for most of the buildings which is a lot of work. The satellite shots from Wilmot south to Annapolis Royal are pretty poor as well.

In the middle of a serious help scare with my father at the moment so not going to have much time for any route for a while.
