No. 537 - Help identify.

If it's smaller than a bread box then it belongs in here. Post comments, stories, photos and whatever else seems appropriate for a model railway forum.

No. 537 - Help identify.

Post by stem »

I've had this photo kicking around for quite some time. I saved it from the web and I have not the foggiest idea where from! Has anyone ever seen this locomotive or know of the owner of this fine scale beast?

I saw that on either Cantmodeltrains or Atlantic Rails. Can't remember whose it was and can't find the original

Interesting that when compared to No. 32, this on has a silver face on the smoke box while No. 32 does not.

Regarding the silver smokebox fronts on the DAR, I found this newspaper article which puts a pretty exact date (Fall 1938) when the DAR loco fronts were painted silver:

"Much favourable comment has been made on the new color scheme recently adopted for the front end of locomotives. The old black color formerly in use has given way to a bright silver making the unit much more visible from a considerable distance and greatly adding the attractiveness of the engine."
George Bishop "Railway Notes" Kentville Advertiser Oct. 27, 1938.

The picture of No. 32 in Gary Ness' Vol. I shows No. 32 did eventually get a silver front when it was shopped near the end of its career.

You come up with the most amazing stuff Dan to just about every conversation we have! Thank you for that. I shall put this on the DARwiki in the colour section soon enough.
