O-Scale Wish List

If it's smaller than a bread box then it belongs in here. Post comments, stories, photos and whatever else seems appropriate for a model railway forum.

O-Scale Wish List

Post by stem »

I know Matt is into O-Scale. Anyone else?

What kind of pieces are you looking for? As I going picking for N stuff I occasionally run into O. How about sometHing you can kitbash into a "Nova Scotia" for example?

Dan and I had a discussion about Labelle passenger car kits and their suitability for DAR models. Hopefully Dan will chime in here and give us the details

The Atlas SW1200 appears to be a good starting point. It would need a scratchbuilt number board, and depending on how accurate you want it, new handrails, steps, fuel tank, bell and horn. Atlas makes flexicoil sideframes. Unlike the other O scale Atlas locos with dual motors, the SW has a single motor with dual drives and I've been told it runs awesome.

Atlas makes a USRA 0-6-0, but I'm not sure how close it is to any DAR prototypes.

Sunset makes the D-10 and it looks sweet.

CP minibox resin kit: http://southerncarandfoundry.com/index. ... ucts_id=23 I have one, unbuilt.

CN resin boxcar kit: http://www.isp.ca/sylvan/kits/3051.htm

CN and CP wooden cabooses by Mullet River Models/David Nadeau. Gorgeous, but hard to find.

The entire Intermountain O scale line was bought by Atlas a few years ago, but unbuilt kits can be found. The 40’ AAR boxcar is a perfect starting point for a CN car. Chooch makes a parts upgrade kit, and Des Plains produces the 8 rung Canadian ladders.

Gilmaur makes an S-2 brass and metal kit. Could be a stand-in for the S-3 or a CN interchange unit. http://www.mike.calvert.btinternet.co.u ... ls.htm#S-2

Depending on how deep your pockets are, I know of two guys who scratchbuild steam engines out of brass.

Intermountain and now Atlas produce a 2 bay USRA hopper which is perfect for a CN car. These cars saw service on the DAR: http://dardpi.ca/wiki/index.php?title=File:Dar2665a.jpg

Take a look at this site for ideas: http://www.proto48.org/

Red Caboose produced a 40’ flat car, and makes a good CN model. They also made nice 40’ tank cars.

When I got into P48, my idea was to have a simple switching layout, not based on any real location. If you want to model the Kentville yard, keep in mind O scale needs some serious real estate, and everything is more expensive than N or HO scales. If you only want a few models for a shelf, I highly recommend it.

The Labelle stuff is gorgeous. The 0-390 would be a decent start for vans 91 or 92. The O-360 would make a pretty good start for combine 3268.

The 0-6-0 look close for 6227 but the tender will never do.

The Sunset is a perfect D10h like 999!

All the rest.. awesome. O-Scale really is the modeller railway modeller's scale. It's classic. The detail possible is the big attraction. The price is equal if not generally more than G-Scale though. Ouch! Good display size though I agree. That's all my G-Scale ended up being.

Dont forget that Weaver is shortly to release CP G5 class pacifics in O. A bit of a stretch to number for the G2, but given the alternatives, it'll do just fine. A few G2 s were built in O scale my Miniatures by Eric but it would be easier to find a liberal supporter in Alberta...

USRA Std 0-6-0 switchers can also do for a U3. A few mods and a new tender. Can be found from time to time at Norm's O Scale in Portland ME. Check his website.

If anyone is interested in obtaining a CPR van, I know Dave Nadeau and there may be a few models floating around from other O scale friends. Let me know

Anyone interested seeing a pic of an O scale freight headed up by a D10 on my fledgling DAR?

Steve, feast your eyes on this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/162294927978?_t ... EBIDX%3AIT

I'm thinking magenta, heavy arched lettering on the tender, 1893 - 1902 era. Sweeeet.

MTH made variations on the 4-4-0. Cab, driver diamater, stacks, dome, etc.

4-4-0, "General Grant", Manchester Works, Built, 1867

But it wouldn't take much to pawn it off as a Portland locomotive like the Minnehaha:
http://dardpi.ca/wiki/index.php?title=File:DAR0006a.jpg

Looks like only DAR 1 to 9 were wood burners and 7 of them were Portlands so this would be a good model base for most of them. All this 1860 - 1875 range stuff.

The boiler wall and instruments are hokey as are the plastic logs. Nice opportunity for detailing. I like how the previous owner split some branches to make real looking firewood. The tender would need a few touches too but doesn't look too far off either.

G's too big, N's too small and as age age sets in much the same can be said for HO for me. I think I'm leaning toward my childhood days when I loved my O scale.

Going through my Model Railroader 1934 - 2009 collection on DVD, I am finding some cool old stuff. Quite a few ads for La Belle Woodworking for instance that span decades.

An editorial by Lynn Westcott from April 1964 revealing that by the early 60's, HO had already taken O by storm in a survey that had conducted. HO respondents were at 90% but O scale was just at 6%. Half the respondents had started modeling after 1950. Quite the change in about 15 years when HO had just started to gather steam. A 4 x 8 layout was the most common and the majority preferred pre-streamlined railroads to modeling modern railroads with the additional comment that even in 1964, there was very low interest in modeling turn of the century and earlier railroads.

I have had a lot of fun looking up many old brand names in the old MRs for O scale products and while the majority of those companies are long gone, Googling them reveals that many of them are still be horse-traded or auctioned on eBay if one knew the names to look for.
Just to name a few try:
"BC Models" Boxcar Ken O Gauge
"Kemtron Products Co." o gauge
"American Model Railroad Co" o gauge
"atwater models" o gauge
"general models corporation" o gauge
"the hines line co" o gauge
"graceline model railroads" o gauge
