DAR plate

Post by Alexandre Stuart »

Hi, as I have never really lived in NS, I never really knew about the DAR, just the WHRC gypsum operations. A year ago, my grandmother gave me Gary Ness' latest book on the DAR, and since I have been trying to gain as much knowledge that I can about the company. Little did I know that my great grandfather (and all of his brothers)had been employees on the railway (on the Truro Sub). I say this because a member of my family has given me a hundred year old DAR plate which most certainly belonged to him. I don't know if this model is known to exist.

When I received the plate I did some research and found it is practically as old as the DAR.
The company which made it engraved their logo on the back, and the logo was used for a limited period of time. I am also guessing it was given to the employees for everyday use, judging from its wear and paintdrops (of the same color an the decorations on the front) on the back.

Please let me know if this is a one of a kind find as I am very curious.

You've got yourself a real gem there, Alexandre. The green pattern is very rare. Blue is more common. Andrew Blackburn has a few green pieces in his collection and I have seen some elsewhere.

That is very interesting that you have family roots to the DAR. It would be great if you can find out any information about them and add their names and positions to the wiki.

Cheers.

Awesome, thanks for the info.
As for my DAR relatives, I am trying to find more information about them, and have already learnt a lot. Hopefully the next time I come over to NS I will be able to learn more (hopefully this year). If you want I could share everything I have so far in the crew room or waiting room.

Matt is the one who knows a bit more of the plates.

Maybe put it under the one for employees as that seems like it would be the better spot.

As for the Gary Ness book he's done three up, if the book you have it about 1.5 - 2cm thick then that's his third book. It's still a really nice book and another book which has some DAR in it is Bill Linley's Trackside in the Maritimes.

I moved this topic to here because I don't want this to disappear after 90 days on the barter board section.
