Re: DAR no. 39 number plate
Hi The number plate from engine 25 hung in the lobby of the Lord Nelson Hotel until the late 1980's. I had spoke to one of the DAR employees about the number plate not being there anymore this being in the early 1990's and there seemed to be a knowledge of it maybe being removed by someone that worked for the railway. The DAR crews that stayed over in Halifax used this hotel. This plate appeared in the brochure for the 1967 confederation train that I have a copy .

That means we know there are at least four number plates in existence.

Re: DAR no. 39 number plate
Did anyone find any record of the royal charter?
I did go through some of my snowstorm information and the company was out of London.
.....Due to such a large snowfall, the company experienced a large loss of revenue from the stoppage of the train and the money needed to clear the line. The money totaled over $100,000. The board of Directors in London had no idea, how severe the snowstorm really was, so Mr. Griftin went to London, with photographs, facts and figures.....
Would be really interesting to find the charter?? Might have to go looking...

Re: DAR no. 39 number plate
It was a while back but if I remember correctly I checked with the Order in Council in England and Canada and could not find anything. My footsteps could be retraced - maybe I missed something.
At the same time, you DON'T have to have a Royal Charter to display a crown.
Check this link.

The "Royal Hudsons" have such permission to display the Crown.

Re: DAR no. 39 number plate
Some further notes to this thread.
I have identified at least 5 different versions of the number plates:
V1 - large engine numbers, unidentified block font, "Dominion Atlantic Railway Company." in the outer circle background of circle unpainted or painted some light colour. (see No. 21, No. 28, No. 43)
V2 - large engine numbers, unidentified block font, "Dominion Atlantic Railway Company." in the outer circle background of circle painted the same as the inner circle. (see No. 18)
V3 - finer engine numbers, CP Roman font, "Dominion Atlantic Railway Company." in the outer circle background of circle unpainted or painted some light colour. (see No. 33)
V4 - finer engine numbers, CP Roman font, "Dominion Atlantic Railway." in the outer circle background painted the same as the inner circle. (see No. 25, No. 32)
V5 - finer engine numbers, CP Roman font, "Dominion Atlantic Railway." in the outer circle background painted the same as the inner circle. NO CROWN and no flourish on the bottom (see No. 23, No. 32 builder photo, No. 33).
Also note while searching locos I found a really cool DAR logo on the side of the light box. I'll let you look it up on the wiki. Check builder photos on No. 18 (Y&AR No. 6), No. 19 (W&AR 15 with WAR logo), No. 20 (W&AR 16 with WAR logo), No. 23, No. 26, No. 27 & No. 32.
Check also:
DAR No. 16 builder photo for Yarmouth & Annapolis No.6 - is that not an earlier version of the plate that precedes the D.A.R? Looks like a crown on top of that too.
DAR No. 19 builder photo for Windsor & Annapolis No. 15 - is that not an earlier version of the plate that precedes the D.A.R? There's no crown on top though.
