Canadian Pacific Railway Coleman 639 Lantern

Post by RedLink27 »

So, the Coleman Company of Canada made these model 639 lanterns for CP Rail back in the 1970s and 1980s:

Most of these are found in Québec and farther west. They are stamped 'CP Rail' on the collar. From what I can gather, they were kept in the caboose and were rarely used, and often ended up collecting dust. After liquid fuel lanterns were outlawed on trains, a good portion of these 639's were scraped, another portion went home with the railway workers, and the rest were sold by CP Rail as surplus.
But can anyone confirm if these were used on the Dominion Atlantic Railway? I have a fond interest in both Coleman Canada and the Canadian Pacific Railway. Finding one of these within Nova Scotia that was used on the DAR would be amazing.

Anyway, just wondering if these were indeed used here in Southwest Nova (if anyone knows).
Thanks

Hi Redlink27,

This is the first I've heard of this type of Coleman lantern.

Just curious, that looks like a station next to your name. Can you tell us more about it?

Any idea what became of the VIA Meteghan station? Could this be it? https://www.google.ca/maps/@44.0963375, ... 312!8i6656

Hi,I have a 1964 model 247 Coleman that came out of a boarding car of the DAR. One of the workers gave it to my father as the lamp was in disrepair in a cupboard. It has a bracket that the CPR used to hold it on the wall.

I cannot confirm if that is the VIA Meteghan shelter. If it is, it was definitely heavily modified.
As for my profile pic, it's the older Meteghan station (pre-VIA rail). Most people believed that it was demolished after the railway was abandoned; in reality, it was moved to a location in the woods near where one of my friends' lives.

Rather unfortunately, it was torn down by a bunch of young punks on ATVs in 2014. Sad to say, I know the guys who did it. I'm just glad that I was able to take a photo before it happened. (Although, really, the building was in horrible shape. Even if they hadn't torn it down, nature would have eventually destroyed it)

Very, very nice 247R!
Along with the CPR 639, that lantern isn't super common either. Being that it's off of the DAR makes it even more special.

That's neat to know the old Meteghan station survived. I wish I had known about it before it got demolished.

Can I post your photo to the wiki? Can I list where it was moved?

You certainly can! TECHNICALLY it was still within the village of Meteghan Station, but I say Maxwellton to prevent confusion (It's practically in Maxwellton, which is just down the road from the village of Meteghan Station). It's just that it doesn't make sense to say it was moved from Meteghan Station to Meteghan Station.
So sure, go ahead. Just say it was my pic and it's all good!

That's a shame about the destruction of the Meteghan Station by those ATVers. In its prime it was such a perfect station in miniature, complete with an operator's bay - the type of structure I dream of building in my backyard some day for a train layout! Thank you for capturing its final form in pictures.

Here is a model 639 Coleman lantern for sale in Saskatchewan, far far away from the DAR:

A little late in on this thread.. sorry...

Andrew, you have some of the neatest stuff accumulated over the years. Do you mind if we post those photos of the standard equipment memo and the lantern to the wiki?
