New member - formerly from Sheffield Mills

Post by fergusontea »

Good day. I grew up in Sheffield Mills and am most familiar with the Cornwallis Valley and North Mountain lines, of course. However, I'm young enough that I only remember the trains going as far as Steam Mill.

If anyone is interested, I took a bunch of photos last fall of the remaining on warehouses from Kingsport to Weston: Fruit Warehouses

I keep meaning to go back and post Google Maps locations for each of the warehouses... One of these days. :)

In light of the Grand Pre warehouse burning recently, we'd better start recording everything we possibly can, even if it's not interesting at the moment. :)

Hi Mike:

Those shots are a nice addition to the site. Thanks!

I understand the station in Lakeville was actually moved from Billtown, and was used as a bunkhouse for orchard workers.

This info came from a booklet called "The Weston Branch and Margaretville" by Elizabeth Clarke. Unfortunately, it does not have an ISBN, but you may be able to get it through Interlibrary Loan.

Mike..

Welcome and glad you found us! Sorry for the delay in getting around to checking the forum here. I've been going like a mad hatter keeping track of all the images coming in and trying to get them all on the wiki.

Very cool shots of the warehouses! I'm going to throw that link on the wiki under the CVR section. If you ever get the urge, shots of some of the the old railway roadbed would be awesome too. You can still see the north mountain line on Google maps. I'll followed the trail successfully all the way from Weston to Kentville and Kingsport. Amazing you can still see it after 45 years in some cases.
Links are now here in the "External Link" section:

As a matter of interest, Dan Conlin who contrubutes a lot of history to the wiki on the CVR has a layout of the Kingsport branch in progress for your inspiration:

Thanks again for the link to your site. My compliments on your site; a nice clean consistent site with interesting content. Looks sharp and thanks for the plug on the DARDPI on your blog as well! By the way I love the slide show. If I could I would incoporate that into the wiki for the steam and Dayliner gallery. Care to share what it is?

Thanks. I took them last fall but wanted to share them with people who'd care, so I was delighted to discover this site! Finding the old railbed isn't a problem for me as I lived in Sheffield Mills for 27 years before moving away and knew the location of the line quite well. :-)

I forgotten until now that I'd made a Google Map of the line and warehouses: http://maps.google.ca/maps/ms?msa=0&msi ... =UTF8&z=11
Let me know if the link works for you! The map isn't completed because the satellite image east of Canning is still low resolution and I don't want to risk misaligning the blue line. :-)

Additionally, in the back of my mind's history I can see an old station just west of Poplar Grove, in an orchard where the rail line crosses the 220, and I don't think it was the Billtown station...? Is it still there? I don't think I'm thinking of the old Billtown station, but maybe I am; it was years ago.

I use the iWeb application that came with my Mac so unless you're a Mac fanatic, like myself, you'll be out of luck. :)

Man I'm grinning from ear to ear! Your Google map tracks the CVR along exactly the same lines as my Google map does but I didn't know you could draw a line like that so mine has a million points instead. This is very good stuff. Wonderfully researched and there will be at a minimum a handful of hard core DAR fans thankful for the time you spent researching this but especially for the great job you did documenting it! I'm going to make sure Dan Conlin gets an eyeball of this because I know for sure he'll be grinning like a Cheshire cat when he sees this.

Again, I've added the Google Map links to the site right below the same links I already had for your Fruit Warehouse page.

I thought you were going to tell me the slide show was a MAC thing. Rats. Well I'm in the process of adding some extensions to the wiki for widgets so I can run a slide show from there instead then.

Just one or two messages above this one didn't Matt say "station in Lakeville was actually moved from Billtown"?

Hey, I'm glad you folks are enjoying the map. I discovered that feature last winter and went nuts but didn't look at it again until yesterday! I'd love to add more points of interest to it, if anyone has any. Old structures or structure locations, sidings, and whatever else. :-)

That's quite possible! When I was young, I used to ride around in the pickup with my father when he was on errands but I wasn't always aware of where we were. We'd go from Lawrence Parker's David Brown (later, Case) dealership in Medford all the way up to the DeLaval (milking equipment) dealer in Middleton.

I just had a look at Mike's Google map in satellite. Very cool indeed! If you go to "Black Rock Rd" you can see the top of Don Foster's ex CP caboose 435459. It is listed in the Trackside Guide under - Part III: Preserved Railway and Traction Equipment: Nova Scotia - Waterville (3-111). His house is immediately above (Northish) the rail line on the right hand side of the road. The caboose is just northeast of his house. Don is a big DAR memoribilia collector.

Which warehouses on your map were these that burned this year?

It was the one directly across from teh Grand Pre HIstoric site and aren't on his maps. The other one that burned was the one on the west side of the road in Greenwich as well as the ones in Waterville

I believe so. That is the one that the business was in when I was last down there. The smaller one is gone now. I think th eParks Canada organization has built some sort of intrepretive site there now.
